Ehresmann, Martin Join 2014 Women's Class

Hannah Ehresmann accepts her gold medal from last year's Minnesota state tournament.

Last Monday, December 10th, was a banner day in the history of Penn State's NCAA women's program, as it received 2014 commitments from two high-end players: Minnesota goaltender Hannah Ehresmann and Colorado defender Remi Martin.

Ehresmann has been something of an underdog story, as her rise to prominence came after playing for Minnetonka's JV as a freshman. Suffice it to say, she's well past that now.

While Sydney Rossman was the Skippers' primary starter in goal last season, Ehresmann was nevertheless an important part of a rotation that helped the team to a second consecutive Minnesota AA title. This year so far, she's split minutes right down the middle with Rossman (although Rossman still tends to get the big games), and has a shutout to her credit, on December 1st against Duluth.

Several accolades have been a part of her growing status as well. She played in the Girls Upper Midwest High School Elite League this past fall and was also picked for the USA Hockey Select 16 Player Development Camp in July.

In what's surely about to become a go-to story for the Penn State media in the order of "Evan Royster is good at lacrosse:" she helped hockey become the official state sport of Minnesota beginning in 2008. Seriously.
It took state Sen. Gen Olson, 70, more than 44 years, 1 month and 12 days to get her ideas to the State Capitol. Talk about a long wait.

But with the Minnetrista Republican's help, two bright-eyed 11-year-olds from Minnetonka could have a bill designating ice hockey as the official state sport on the books in St. Paul this spring.

Hannah Ehresmann and Brendan Broviak, both sixth-graders at Minnetonka Middle School East, stood alongside Olson on Wednesday as members of the Senate's State and Local Government Operations and Oversight Committee listened to testimony on the bill.
Before testifying in front of the committee, Ehresmann helped collect over 600 signatures on a petition in favor of official recognition for hockey, which was finally made official by Governor Tim Pawlenty's signature in 2009.

Ehresmann, of course, will join present Minnetonka teammates Laura Bowman and Amy Petersen (both of whom are entering in 2013) on the Nittany Lions.

This season, Martin is playing for both the Foothill Flyers Midget Major AA (boys) and the Colorado Tigers 19U (girls).

She was outstanding at the Silver Stick Tournament with the Flyers in October, putting up four assists in four games to help the team to a 3-1-0 record over the weekend. In a 5-4 win over Idaho, Foothills rallied from a 3-2 third-period deficit to win 5-4. Martin assisted on a mid-third period goal that gave the Flyers a temporary 4-3 lead, then on the winner with 3:11 remaining in the contest.

Her girls squad is off to a solid start this season, as Martin joined the team for the Union College Fall Festival and helped the Tigers post two shutout wins while there, against the Brampton Thunder and the Ohio Flames. Colorado has also beaten ACHA Women's Division 1 squads Colorado and Colorado State repeatedly this season, going 3-0-0 against the Buffaloes and 1-0-1 against the Rams.

In past seasons, Martin has played for Heritage High School in Littleton, as well as for the Arapahoe Warriors and Colorado Select organizations.

Impressively, Martin is an annual selection to USA Hockey Player Development Camps. She was at Select 16s in St. Cloud, MN in July after attending Select 15s in 2011 (where she was an all-star selection) and Select 14s in 2010.
