Ice Lions' Weekend Called Off

It should probably go without saying for events scheduled for New Jersey at this point, but the Ice Lions' games Friday at Monmouth and Sunday at Rider have been cancelled in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, according to a team source. No makeup dates - or whether there even will be makeup dates - have been disclosed.

Monmouth is located in West Long Branch, NJ, very near to the central coastline of the state. Rider is in Lawrenceville, NJ on the opposite side of the state (near the border with Pennsylvania). Obviously, and first and foremost, thoughts and support go out to those affected by the storm as the recovery efforts get underway.

From a hockey standpoint (and again, this is far, far less important than the well being of those affected), it puts Penn State (6-2-1, 3-0-0 MACHA North) in a little bit of an awkward spot.

Next weekend, the Ice Lions will head to Siena College in Loudonville, NY for games against Siena, William Paterson and Florida Gulf Coast. All three of those teams joined PSU at the ACHA National Tournament last season, with FGCU winning the national championship. That's pretty daunting. Oh, by the way, after playing the defending champs at 11:15 a.m. Sunday morning, the team plans to drive five hours to Hershey to play ACHA D1 Lebanon Valley that evening.

As bad as that all sounds - and toss in some more weather concerns for good measure - the Ice Lions will now attack that weekend having played just three games in the previous month, as the three weekends previous to the coming one were scheduled with clashes only on Saturday.
